A HAMPSHIRE motorway was closed for nearly 10 hours after a four-car high-speed crash.

The incident happened at about 2am last night between junctions 1 at Cadnam and junction 2, the interchange with the A36.

Highways England tweeted just before 12pm that the road was re-open and the delays had started to clear.

A Hampshire Constabulary statement said: "Three police vehicles were damaged during a pursuit to stop a black Honda Accord which had failed to stop after it was seen driving dangerously causing a risk to other members of the public.

"The high speed collision took place after the Honda Accord came into contact with the police vehicles. Thankfully no-one was seriously injured.

"The driver of the Honda Accord, a 58 year-old man, has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop, and driving while under the influence of excessive alcohol.

"He has been taken to Southampton General Hospital to be checked over for his injuries."

Several people were injured but the injuries were said to be non-life-threatening.

Traffic was diverted through Totton while the eastbound carriageway of the motorway was shut.

There was congestion on the A31 to the Rufus Stone turn-off as a result.
