CONCERNS for children's safety has sparked a call for a crossing where a new Lidl food store is set to open.

Town councillors in Ringwood have called on Hampshire County Council to approve plans for a pedestrian crossing at the site in Christchurch Road.

Councillor Christine Ford told Wednesday's full council meeting (JAN 25) that Ringwood had yet to receive word about the crossing.

The supermarket is due to open at the end of February.

Councillors hoped Lidl's £152,000 contribution to transport would be used to provide a "proper crossing" for families crossing the busy street to and from nearby schools.

But Hampshire County Council - the authority which would approve the plans - has yet to decide what the contribution will be used for despite having received the funding in July.

Councillor Steve Rippon-Swaine told the meeting that Hampshire County Council was experiencing "low staffing levels" and that a decision was expected some time in February.

"Considering the money was handed over in July that can be considered swift," he said.

Councillor Philip Day said: "I think it's hugely probable it will open on time and I wish them luck with it.

"But the fact remains there are numerous houses of family accommodation on the western side of Christchurch Road which a significant number of children will have to cross in order to get to school.

"Personally I think where the safety of children is concerned I find that unacceptable."

Councillor Day said he would urge officers dealing with the matter to act as quickly as possible for the sake of the town's children.

Councillor Ford added: "It's not opening in April or May it's going to be open in February we're informed. We have got to get a move on with that."

The plans for the multi-million-pound supermarket, which is set to employ up to 40 people, were approved last year.
