A GAS leak at a petrol station forced an exclusion zone to be put place - for the second time in a week.

Fire crews were called to the Co-operative Petrol Station on Wellworthy Road in Lymington last night after gas leak sparked a second call to the service.

It comes just a week after the station was closed last Tuesday for the same reason.

A 100m exclusion zone was put in place after firefighters from Lymington and Redbridge were called to the site at 5pm on Monday.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said they were called by the general manager to investigate a possible leak on site.

"For safety a 100m cordon was put in place once we verified there was a leak.

"Once the site was made safe, we handed over to security and police."

Specialised gas engineers are due to arrive at the petrol station this morning.

The fire crews left the scene at 9.26pm.

Last week the liquid petroleum gas leak was discovered in the line between the tank and dispenser.

The tank was isolated and around 50 litres of LPG was vented into the air, with large fans used to help disperse the gas.

Since then, the shop has remained closed and was due to reopen today.

A spokesperson for the Co-op said: “The safety of customers and colleagues is our number one priority. The fire brigade attended to conduct some monitoring tests as part of our ongoing investigations.

"We expect the site will be closed for at least a further week and apologise for any inconvenience.”
