A YOUTH centre in Ringwood that closed its doors amid “staffing problems” has reopened.

The Place closed on October 30 after Antony Lewis was dismissed from running the café by a majority of members sitting on Ringwood Town Council’s full meeting during a closed session.

This was despite a heartfelt plea from two children to keep The Place open.

A sign on the entrance of the £540,000 hub at Carver’s Field, said: “The Place will be closed until further notice.”

The facility opened in February following a campaign lasting several years spearheaded by Ringwood’s young people.

The decision to close came as a bitter blow to youngsters who congregated to meet their peers.

Ringwood Town Council clerk Steve Nash said: “There were a number of staffing issues which needed to be resolved.”

The Place is set to open on Mondays and Wednesdays between 3pm-9pm, Fridays between 8pm-10pm and Saturdays between 1pm-4pm.

Mr Nash added: “This is an increase in the number of hours which were previously provided and which we hope to continue.”

He added: “All councillors are committed to the future of The Place and to provide not only the support that Ringwood’s vulnerable young people need but to provide a café facility that has been much appreciated by so many young people.”

A statement posted by Mr Lewis on The Café at The Place, Carvers, Ringwood Facebook page read: “As much as I disagree with the town council on this I have neither the funds or desire to fight on.

“I really want to say sorry to kids who have been with me all the way with even two, 13-year-olds who came to last night’s meeting to ask for the café to stay.

“I am sure you all understand that I have done my best for The Place but on this occasion my best just wasn’t good enough.

“A huge thanks for everyone who has supported me here.”
