AN 89-year-old woman has died following a collision involving an overturned car on Whitefield Road in New Milton.

Station Road was closed between Manor Road and Ashley Road, and Whitefield Road was closed between Old Milton Road and Station Road.

Bournemouth Echo:

The car, a silver Rover saloon, is believed to have veered onto the pavement and hit signposts and a telegraph pole before colliding with a female pedestrian.

Hampshire Police said this morning: "A woman has died after a collision in New Milton yesterday afternoon.

"Police were called at 1.57pm to the incident in Whitefield Road, where a Rover car was in collision with a pedestrian.

"The pedestrian, 89, from New Milton, was taken to Southampton General Hospital but sadly died of her injuries shortly after.

A spokesman for South Central Ambulance Service said: "A call came into us at 13:57, reporting a car had gone off the road, hit a lamppost then subsequently hit a female pedestrian.

"We sent three ambulances to the scene."

"One of South Central Ambulance Service's senior officers also attended, as did the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance car."

The road remained closed for several hours due to ongoing telecoms and electricity repairs.

A woman who works in Station Road said: “It looks like the car went straight across Whitefield Road and up onto the footpath before flipping onto its roof.

“When the car went up onto the path it demolished a number of signs and took out a telegraph pole."

New Milton Town councillor Alan Rice said the crash happened close to his house.

He said it was "the most serious crash in the area for a while".

"The place was crawling with police cars. I also saw a couple of fire engines.

"The vehicle was upside down. I heard two people are badly hurt.

"They're not letting people back into their houses on the road. The police had to escort me out of my drive.

"I saw police officers taking pictures of some personal belongings that were left on the road when the car turned over.

"A recovery vehicle was there putting the car on a trailer around 5.15pm."

Bournemouth Echo:

Cllr Steve Davies said: “This incident is something that will shock the whole community. It definitely shocked me when I saw all the police cars zooming past earlier.

“It is absolutely devastating and my thoughts are with the two elderly people involved.

“This road is not usually an accident hotspot. It is quite busy but I’m sure everyone will be surprised to hear about this.”
