A FOOTBALL legend will start this today's New Forest Marathon.

Southampton FC favourite, Francis Benali, will sound the start hooter at the popular running event.

Returning for its 33rd year to New Park Showground in Brockenhurst, the marathon will welcome Benali, who enjoyed a 20 year career with Southampton.

Chris Farr from ORA Events, who are organising the marathon, said: “We are so excited to have Francis start the event and wish to thank him for taking the time to fit us in his busy schedule.

"To have somebody who has achieved so much in his sport but also through his charitable endeavours, it provides the perfect inspiration for all those taking part."

Benali has inspired many with his amazing challenge to run between every Premier League football ground in the country, raising £100k for charity.

And he will join those running in the 10k as well.

Fyffes bananas have also partnered with the New Forest Marathon this year, providing 5,000 bananas to all finishers including those taking part in the kids' race.

There will be entertainment during the day with music from musician Liam White and Kings of the Weekend.

Entry for the event has now closed.
