A jeweller previously robbed at gunpoint in a terrifying £60,000 raid has been targeted for a second time.

A cyclist armed with a mallet tried to smash his way into a business owned by David Price in full view of passing shoppers.

After failing to break the glass he fled empty-handed and sped off on a mountain bike towards Stanford Hill.

It comes almost three years after masked men burst into the shop and ordered Mr Price to kneel down at the rear of the premises.

One of the raiders stood over him, pointing a gun at his head, as other members of the gang used hammers to smash their way into the display cabinet.

They made off with cash and jewellery worth tens of thousands of pounds including 60 watches and five trays of earrings.

Mr Price, 57, was on his own in the shop, which still bears the name of previous owner Barry Papworth.

He said: "I was very frightened. I've owned the shop for nine years and nothing like this has ever happened before. I'm still very nervous."

Mr Price has since increased security by keeping the front door locked. Anyone wanting to come inside has to ring the bell and wait to be admitted.

In 2014 the three robbers appeared at Southampton Crown Court and were jailed for a total of 27 years.

The latest incident occurred on Tuesday just before 1pm.

PC David Barnes said: "A man on a mountain bike stopped outside the jewellers and used a mallet to strike a glass panel in an attempt to access the items on display.

"When the glass didn't break he rode off empty-handed in the direction of Stanford Hill.

“I’d like to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident or anyone who has any information about who may be responsible."

The would-be raider was white, aged 25-35, and wearing a dark-coloured hooded top and light-coloured gloves. He was riding a black full suspension mountain bike.

Mr Price was unavailable to comment on the incident.

Ring PC Barnes at Lyndhurst police station on 101 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
