POLICE have named the woman killed as she drove along a New Forest road notorious for two miles of sharp bends.

Polly Darvall, 22, was travelling through a remote part of the Forest in the middle of the night when her car left the road and smashed into a tree.

She is thought to have died instantly in the crash, which occurred on a twisting section of the B3055 Brockenhurst to Beaulieu road.

She was originally from Taunton in Somerset but had been living in the New Forest recently and was working as a waitress.

Her family has been informed and a file is being prepared for the coroner.

Police say Polly was negotiating one of the bends when she lost control of her car in the early hours of Saturday.

Last night Ken Thornber, county councillor for Brockenhurst and a former chairman of Hampshire County Council, called for white lines to be painted along both sides of the road to make the route safer.

He said: “The road doesn’t have a bad accident record but it does include a series of bends.

“There might be an argument for painting a white line along either side of the road to ensure the bends show up more clearly in car headlights. I would be very prepared to pursue it.”

The B3055 is a narrow, unlit route in a sparsely populated part of the district.

Brockenhurst district councillor Maureen Holding, a former member of the National Park Authority, said: “It’s a long, windy road and the trees in that area are very dense.

“It can be quite dark at night if there’s no moon - and leaves on the road can make it very slippery.

“Other hazards include animals in the road. I went along there the other night and there were deer all over the place.”

The accident comes just days after it was revealed that country roads are among the deadliest in the UK.

New figures from the Department of Transport show that 154 people were killed on rural routes in the south east last year and a further 1,888 were seriously injured. A third of all fatalities occurred on bends.

The VW Beetle was travelling towards Beaulieu when the accident happened.

Police say the vehicle was negotiating a right-hand bend near the entrance to Roundhill campsite, which is closed for the winter.

A spokesman said: “The car collided with a tree and came to a stop in undergrowth off the road sometime between 1am and 1.30am.

“A short time later a passing member of the public contacted the emergency services.”

A South Central Ambulance spokesman added: “We received a report that a vehicle had come off the road. We sent an ambulance but the person involved was pronounced dead at the scene.”

The woman, who was the car’s only occupant, will not be named until all her relatives have been traced and informed of the tragedy.

It is the second time in three months that a fatal crash has occurred outside a Brockenhurst campsite.

As reported in the Daily Echo, Darren Harvey, 25, of Portsmouth Road, Woolston, Southampton, died in August when his car collided with a fire engine near the Hollands Wood site on the A337.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the latest accident. Call Totton police station on 101 and ask to speak to officers involved in Operation Whiteboard.
