A 103-year-old, who used to play on fields where she now lives, celebrated her milestone birthday with a tea party.

Joan Stephens, one of three centenarians at a Lymington care home, celebrated her 103rd birthday at Colten Care's Belmore Lodge.

Mrs Stephens, who was born and bred in Pennington, used to play on fields where the home now stands.

"In those days I knew the name of everyone who lived in the village. I can't say the same today," said Joan.

One of 10 children, Joan's family had lived in the village for many generations.

Her grandfather, Joseph Tizard, was a stonemason who worked on the Hurst Castle lighthouse when it was restored in 1858.

Joan met her husband, Alfred, while attending school in Lymington, and the couple later married in 1940.

Formerly an active member of the church and the Women's Institute, Joan has written two books about her birthplace - 'Pennington Remembered - A Pictorial Collection' and 'Snippets from a long time ago in Pennington.'

"This is a lovely part of the world and I have never wanted to move away," said Joan who has a son, Bill, and two grandsons.

Belmore Lodge marked Joan's special day by organising a tea party for family and friends together with a specially baked cake.

Among the gifts received from friends was a jar of anti-ageing cream.

Asked for the secret of her long life, Joan said: "I have a sense of humour and I think life is what you make it."

Janie Pearman, home manager, said Joan is popular with staff and fellow residents.

She added: "Joan is a great character and you'd never think she's 103 years old. It's a huge privilege to share her birthday with her family and friends."

The two other centenarians at Belmore Lodge are Cyril Bibbs, who is also 103, and Leah Thorndyke, 100.
