A WORLD War One aerial dogfight will be re-enacted over a former New Forest airfield later this month.

The Doug Gregory Memorial Flight will pay homage to the man who was awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross after surviving almost 70 missions over Nazi-occupied Europe during the Second World War.

He died last month after being knocked down by a hit and run driver.

A founder member of the The Great War Display Team, he built a 1917-style bi-plane and became Britain's oldest stunt pilot before ‘retiring’ in 2013 with a final celebratory sortie on his 90th birthday.

The display team was formed in 1988 by a group of aviation enthusiasts, many of whom built their planes themselves and they have flown the replica aircraft at shows and displays all over the UK.

On Saturday May 23 they will re-enact a World War I dogfight in the skies above East Boldre to commemorate the arrival of the Royal Flying Corps in the village one hundred years ago.

It is hoped that, weather permitting, nine aircraft will take part in the display.

There will be five British planes and four German, all replicas of aircraft flown by pilots involved in the 1914-18 conflict.

The display is scheduled to take place between 1pm and 3pm and forms part of the week-long celebration organised to mark the centenary of the Royal Flying Corps training station.
