A MAN has appeared in court over the deaths of two teenage girls killed in a road crash.

Lily Butterfield-Godwin and Abbey Rogers, both 19 and from Lyndhurst, died after the car they were travelling in crashed into a wall in Gosport Lane, Lyndhurst.

James Battrick, of Old Romsey Road, Cadnam was allegedly driving a Mazda RX8 at the time of the crash.

He spoke only to confirm his name when he appeared at Southampton Magistrates Court this morning.

Battrick, 21, is charged with two counts of causing death by careless driving while unfit through drugs.

He is also charged with two counts of causing death by careless driving while over the prescribed limit of alcohol and one count of possessing cannabis.

He arrived in court on crutches wearing a medical cage around his leg and also wore a black shirt and trousers, grey plimsolls, a navy jacket and his hair tied back.

As previously reported Lily and Abbey were given a lift home after a night out at The Stag Hotel, in Lyndhurst where Lily worked part time as a barmaid.

Lily was also a nanny at Teddies Nursery and Abbey worked as a stylist at The Velvet Rooms in Lymington.

The girls, who share a birthday, were both former pupils of Hounsdown School in Totton.

Battrick was released on bail and will appear at Bournemouth Crown Court on May 18.
