A man who used to be the general manager of London Zoo died of pneumonia when he fell ill following a fall, an inquest heard.

John Brown, from Lymington, lived in Woodbury Road and suffered a fall at his home and fractured his right hip on January 18.

The inquest at Winchester Coroner’s Court heard how the 76-year-old’s medical history described him as “wobbly” and frail.

After being taken to Southampton General Hospital he developed an infection.

His health deteriorated again on February 3 and he died of pneumonia on February 9.

Coroner Grahame Short recorded a verdict of accidental death.
