HAMPSHIRE’S Police and Crime Commissioner says new evidence about gang culture is “deeply concerning”.

Commenting on the Home Affairs Committee report Ending Gang and Youth Violence, which was due to be published yesterday, Simon Hayes said: “It is deeply concerning that evidence suggests the number of young people involved in gang crime is higher that police statistics state.

“Work needs to be done to delve deeper into the issue and I will be seeking assurance from Hampshire Constabulary’s Chief Constable that appropriate focus is applied to keep our young people safe from gangs and violence.”

Mr Hayes said greater understanding of why young people are drawn into gangs is needed and all agencies must improve the way they identify and deal with children and young people at risk.
