RESIDENTS and councillors in Lymington have been given details of plans to overhaul an historic lido.

A team from architects Conran and Partners laid out their plans to transform the town’s seawater baths through a multi-million-pound project.

The firm was approached by Lymington Town Council to carry out the project. Last night, firm director Paul Zara told the council’s amenities committee and town residents that under its plans the baths would be split into two areas.

One pool would be treated and have its current gravel bottom replaced with a hard surface for swimming.

The second pool would not be treated as much and would be used for water sports.

The company’s blueprint for the waterfront site would also see a new cafe built.

Councillors said the new building would not only provide a much-needed improvement in catering facilities, but could provide a “signature” building that could become an attraction in its own right.

Mr Zara said it would take about two years for the facility to open, once the go-ahead had been given.

The committee voted to recommend that the council continue working with Conran and Partners and provide £11,000 of funding for initial work.

If the full council votes to back the recommendation at its meeting next month, the company would then draw up detailed proposals to present back to the council.
