DELIGHTFUL lanterns lit up the winter gloom of Poole as a colourful procession wended its way through the town centre.

Hundreds of people turned out for the traditional lantern parade which transformed the town into a beacon of light as children from local schools took part with stunning home-made lanterns and illuminated works of art.

Organised by Poole Town Centre Partnership, youngsters worked with Wave Arts Education over the last few months to create eye-catching lanterns illuminated by LED lights.

Open to everyone, the popular family friendly procession, part of Christmas is a Breeze, sponsored by Breeze Volkswagen, saw the children parading with their masterpieces and an illuminated centre piece.

The colourful, musical parade gathered at Falkland Square where Poole Mayor, Cllr Peter Adams and Town Crier David Squire were waiting to lead them along the High Street.

Accompanied by stilt walkers and Poole Sea Cadets Marching Band, the snaking procession wove its way down the High Street to congregate outside the Guildhall and join Poole Old Town Conservation Group for carols and tasty mince pies.

Graham Richardson, tourism manager said: “It was great to see the results of all the hard work and effort that went into making the lanterns.

“The parade through the High Street generated lots of interest and when they reached the Guildhall for the carol singing with Poole Old Town Conservation Group it created a really nice Christmas community event.”

Adding to the festive spirit there was a snow machine and the forecast wet and windy evening weather held off until the event was over.

The next Christmas is a Breeze event is Poole’s Festive Market in Falkland Square from Saturday to Tuesday, packed with stalls, unique gifts, decorations and delicious food.
