Hundreds of cyclists will take to the roads around the New Forest today.

The area will once again be the focal point for enthusiastic riders, with the second day of the Wiggle New Forest Sportive attracting many bikers.

They will be joined by more cyclists planning to take part in the CTC Wessex Gridiron Event.

The Wiggle Sportive begins at 7.40am at Matchams, while the Girdiron starts at Lymington at 8.30am.

Yesterday, the Wiggle event seemed to pass off without major incident, despite the bad weather overnight and some downpours in the morning.

The two events will partially share their routes today in two locations - Ornamental Drive and between Fordingbridge and Ringwood.

The routes of the Girdiron were amended to ensure riders at these locations would be heading in the same direction as Wiggle participants, rather than going the opposite way.

Drivers are being warned to travel carefully to avoid cyclists on the route which passes Brockenhurst, Beaulieu and Burley.

One motorist in particular, Hazel Platt, from Basingstoke was thankful for the the cyclists after she was helped by six riders following her Nissan Micra getting stuck in a ditch.

She said: "They were so kind. I didn't know what to do and suddenly these six men turned up. It's great that people are able to enjoy the Forest like this."
