Two paramedics and a lorry driver have been taken to hospital after a crash which has closed a road in New Milton.

Emergency services have been called to Lake Grove Road at the junction with Fernhill Lane after a crash involving a Ford Transit drop-side lorry and an ambulance just after 2.20pm.

The South Central ambulance was on its way to an incident when the collision occurred.

The driver of the ambulance, a second paramedic and the driver of the lorry suffered serious injuries. The lorry driver had to be cut out of his vehicle by the fire service.

None of the injuries are thought to be life threatening.

The lorry, registered to Bristol-based company Brandon Hire, ploughed into a tree as a result of the incident, which happened as the ambulance responded to an emergency call with sirens and blue lights on.

A spokesperson for Brandon Hire said driver Nathan McCarthy suffered a suspected broken collar bone in the crash.

“The branch manager and area manager went to the scene to see how he's doing,” she said. “Mr McCarthy was taken to hospital, and we understand he is going to make a good recovery. The company is liasing with the hospital, and of course our priority is our driver's recovery.”

A spokesperson from the South Central Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SCAS) confirmed that a collision had taken place between a lorry and an ambulance travelling to an emergency call-out.

She said: “The ambulance was en route to an emergency travelling under emergency road conditions at the time of the incident.

“We dispatched further emergency resources to assess three casualties. “Three casualties, the two staff members in the ambulance and a patient in the third party vehicle, were conveyed to University Hospital Southampton with injuries believed to be serious but non-life threatening.

“The incident the crew were en route to was attended by another resource.

“An investigation has commenced into the circumstances of the incident and therefore we are unable to comment further at this time."

Fernhill Lane and Barrs Avenue are likely to be closed for two hours, whilst accident investigation work is carried out.
