Two young Wimborne wildlife supporters have taken the red squirrel to heart as they nibble on their favourite biscuits.
Twelve-year-old Thomas and eight-year-old Lily Maidment have been helping the squirrels, which live on Brownsea Island, by putting money in their Dorset Wildlife Trust collecting box every time they eat a biscuit.
When the box arrived in the post last year with the picture of a squirrel, immediately named “Nutty”, they decided the biscuit tin was the best place for it.
Now all the family, including grandparents, pay to indulge in a tasty treat and so far have collected £8.17.
“The population on Brownsea Island benefits from continual management of their habitat and this inspired fundraising idea from Thomas and Lily will help us to continue this work,” said Fiona Sansom, supporter development manager at DWT.
Now the trust is urging people to consider adopting one as a Valentine’s Day gift. It costs £18. For information contact DWT.
