IT'S NOT all jam and Jerusalem at the WI.

In fact, for the ladies of the Ferndown branch, a spring meeting featured tea and technology as members spent two hours learning about 3D printing.

John Cousins, managing director of company isodo3d, usually talks to representatives from businesses and universities about the very latest in 3D printers, scanners and software tech.

However, when his mum Barbara asked him to attend a meeting of Absolutely WI at the Barrington Centre, Mr Cousins said he could "hardly refuse".

Members were given a presentation on cutting-edge technology, and how it relates to medicine, fashion, food and design.

More than 30 3D-printed samples were handed around, so ladies could feel the type of materials used in the industry.

Mr Cousins also gave a live demonstration of a 3D printer at work. It was the first time many members had seen such a machine in action.

At the end of the talk, the ladies were presented with a printed plaque created especially for the meeting.

"It was clear from the outset that Absolutely WI wanted to provide its members with an interesting and enlightening talk on 3D printing," Mr Cousins said.

"It wasn't my normal audience - however, everyone listened very intensely to what I had to say and asked some carefully thought-out questions."

Jo Swanston, president of the group, said: "I think I speak for all our members who attended and say that this was one of the most thought-provoking and amazing presentations we had for a long time.

"I never knew the amount of things that are used every day have been 3D printed.

"I also want to thank John for our 3D printed plaque and to Barbara for making this happen."

Mrs Cousins, treasurer of the branch, said: "We pride ourselves on being one of the largest, most active and prolific WI groups in Dorset.

"Formed under a modern format, Absolutely WI was started in October 2009 and continues to blossom from there.

"We are a WI with a modern twist. Our members are ladies who stand for friendship, self-development and a mutual sense of belonging - all of the things which are good about the traditional WI."
