MORE than 100 people gathered in Wimborne to watch town criers go head-to-head to be named champion of the south.

The Southern England Town Criers' Competition was part of the Blandford Georgian Fayre for many years but is now held every two years in Wimborne.

Last Monday 13 town criers and eight consorts from across Dorset, Devon and Wiltshire gathered in the town square for the competition which included dandy costumes, beautiful frocks, healthy lungs and a true display of British eccentricity.

The spectacle consisting of two rounds of “crying” attracted a crowd of 150. Each crier had to deliver a cry of 100 to 125 words which had to include three “Oyez” at the beginning and end with the loyal announcement of "God Save The Queen”.

Wimborne Town Crier Chris Brown organised the competition which saw Alistair Chisholm of Dorchester crowned the overall champion.

John Collingwood of Bridport was runner-up and third place went to David Retter of Honiton.

The prizes for 'best dressed' town crier went to Peter White of Seaford and 'best dressed' consort went to Kassa Retter of Honiton.

And Kevin and Melanie Knapp of Sturminster Newton were named the 'best dressed' couple.

A new award for the competition was introduced this year by Wimborne Mayor Cllr Sue Cook. The Town Mayor’s Award was presented to Chris Brown for his efforts organising the proceedings.

Mr Brown said: " The competition was extremely tight this year but the colourful and vocal group really enjoyed the day."

The Dorset Youth Marching Band also performed during the event, which was sponsored by Wimborne Town Council, Waitrose, The Wimborne BID and The Priest's House Museum.
