A COMMUNITY centre which closed suddenly has been reopened by a Dorset charity following an “overwhelming” community response.

Prama, based in Poole, have agreed to take on running of the Barrington Centre in Ferndown, just days after it was forced to close.

East Dorset District Council subsequently offered to reopen it, but the trustees of Ferndown Community Association said they were doing everything in their power to open again, and planned to launch an appeal to raise £30,000.

But yesterday, the FCA announced Prama had agreed to retain the staff and underwrite the operating costs of the centre, meaning it could reopen.

Dozens of people flocked to the centre yesterday, with manager Andy Bryant praising the “overwhelming community support”.

Donations already collected will be ring-fenced for the centre and all tickets purchased will be honoured, with coach trips and activity clubs reinstated.

Steve Robinson, chief executive of Prama said: “I am delighted that Prama is able to support the community of Ferndown and facilitate this wonderful centre’s future.

“I would like thank everyone, including the staff team, volunteers and public, who have worked so hard to help, and assure everybody who has made a donation or supported the Barrington Centre through this difficult time.

“I would especially like to recognise the extraordinary efforts made by the trustees who have remained so strong under pressure.

“Although many will know Prama as a charity that primarily provides care to older people, I can assure everyone that we will be supporting the Barrington to be a community centre for all ages.”

Cllr Andy Skeats, portfolio holder for community at East Dorset District Council, said: “The community spirit shown throughout this last week is a testament to how valued the Barrington Centre is by local residents.

“The support of Prama is fantastic, and as landlords of the building, East Dorset District Council looks forward to meeting with the charity to understand their plans for the centre moving forward.”
