REGARDING Bure Club memories – a great article about this legendary venue.
Unfortunately, I am too young to remember and not living in Bournemouth at the time, but someone I used to work with and still see on a regular basis remembers it well and told me this anecdote.
In the early sixties he went to the club one evening and the compere said if you don’t mind hanging around a bit we are having a secret birthday party for a big star, no names mentioned.
The crowd thought why not, so round about 10.30pm the stage and the room went into darkness.
Then all of a sudden the lights came on and who should be standing on stage, but the great Gene Vincent in full leather gear.
He had just finished playing a theatre in Southampton and had sped in a taxi down to the Bure Club to celebrate his birthday party.
