THE owners of Saxon Square shopping centre in Christchurch say they are in talks with operators over filling the empty unit left by Budgens' closure.

The branch closed recently, one of a number of Budgens stores across the country to shut after the company went into administration.

A spokesperson for Saxon Square, which underwent a major renovation a few years ago, said the landlord was in "advanced discussions" with retailers.

"Following the Budgens store closure at Saxon Square Shopping Centre, the landlord is in advanced discussions with a number of potential new occupiers for the unit and is keen to ensure that any new tenant compliments the existing retail offering whilst bringing a new kind of experience for our shoppers", they added.

"Saxon Square currently has 31 thriving occupied units, all whom bring something unique to the centre.

"With just three units currently empty, there is scope for new additions in the future which will further enhance the shopping centre offer.

"McMullen Wilson and Ellis & Partners manage the lettings at Saxon Square and are actively marketing the centre to retailers to ensure we attract new tenants."

Despite the closure of the store, Christchurch still has two other food stores - Waitrose and Marks and Spencer.

The store was formerly a Co-operative, with the chain offering to find jobs for ex-colleagues in the 36 affected stores.

Stores in Christchurch, Gillingham, Shaftesbury and Broadstone were affected by the closure.

In Christchurch, Shoe Zone in the High Street is holding a closing down sale as well.

The High Street chain will shut its doors for good on April 2.

A spokesperson for the company said they were closing as the lease was expiring.
