All change: new rubbish service ready to roll in Christchurch

READY TO LAUNCH: Steve Burdis Director for the Dorset Waste Partnership promoting the new waste service which will start in Christchurch in October READY TO LAUNCH: Steve Burdis Director for the Dorset Waste Partnership promoting the new waste service which will start in Christchurch in October

A NEW rubbish and recycling service is ready to roll in Christchurch on Monday, October 1, with part of East Dorset following suit from Monday, October 29.

The Dorset Waste Partnership, involving seven local councils, is preparing to launch its new recycling and rubbish collection service to its first 53,000 homes.

Christchurch households have received their new containers with an information pack including a user guide and collection calendar.

Residents are being advised to leave their containers at the kerbside by 7am on collection day. Food waste is collected every week with either recycling or rubbish on alternating weeks.

Rubbish left beside bins will not be collected and you can line your kitchen caddy using free compostable liners provided.

Future supplies can be obtained from supermarkets and other outlets.

Residents must remember to lock their larger food bin and put glass bottles and jars in the separate green box.

The service includes a separate weekly food waste collection which will stop food going to landfill where it produces greenhouse gases.

Instead it will be used to generate local energy or composted to help grow turf. Residents will use a seven-litre caddy to collect food scraps in the kitchen before emptying it into a 23-litre lockable outdoor bin.

DWP director Steve Burdis said: “This is the biggest ever change to waste collections in Dorset and follows months of preparations.

“Initially the rounds may take a little longer to complete so please allow until the end of the day for your collection.”

Container deliveries are now under way in part of East Dorset including Ashley Heath , Colehill , Ferndown, Stapehill , St Leonards and St Ives , Three Legged Cross , West Moors , West Parley, Wimborne and Verwood where the new service will start on October 29.

The rest of East Dorset and North Dorset will start using the new service in the first half of next year, followed by Purbeck.

This is a great idea of course and I welcome it but I live in the countryside just outside of Christchurch and instead of giving us a wheelie bin we have 4 different containers and the food waste bin. This is apparently because the lorry can't get down our lane.

I'm going to have to buy a sack truck to wheel these things to the front gate when they're full XD

We were promised a larger black bin due to having a baby and using disposable nappies. Then for some reason they changed their mind and gave us a normal bin instead, with the promise of blue sacks.

We've not yet received either the blue sacks or a written reply as to why they changed what had been promised! Not a good start...

Not sure about christchurch council but hence the free bags we got in east dorset. WoW we got a roll of free bags exactly 5 on the roll dont think that will go far and i do wonder what the council part of the council tax is going on as now we only having our rubbish collected fortnighly. I think there will be a load of illegal fly tips going on aswell as we have to pay extra to have our garden waste collected.

1. Black bin for household rubbish
2. Green lid bin for plastics, cardborad etc
3, Brown caddy for food waste
4, Bigger brown cadde to empty little caddy into
5, Green box for glass
6. Red bag for batteries.
7. Garden waste bin (pay extra)

Where the heck are we supposed to keep all these.
The energy used producing and collecting all these must outweigh the supposed energy savings.

RIDICULOUS

Come to somerford,if you live in any of the flats all we have is a large recycling bin for cardboard etc,no litte food caddy's,no little green bins, but we still have the 2 large bins we always have,so all our waste will just go in them, also this bin canbe accessed by anyone,so i do hope we still have a weekly collection,or im dumping all my waste at the civic offices so it can stink them out for 2 weeks

YES ! This is what we have. When I lived in Poole we had two bins, one for anything that can be recycled and a grey bin for everything else.

They are going to spend an awful lot of dosh on cameras in the New Forest to catch all the fly tipping that's going to go on, any savings made will be eaten up in order to keep the forest from looking like the local dump.

After a decade of 'put this here, put that there', our local rubbish service found out it is cheaper to have us separate only kitchen waste from recyclables. For most of us, the former (food waste etc) is disposed of down a disposal in our kitchen sink, and the latter goes into only one container which is taken away (every other day to avoid rats etc.) and separated by the town recycling service. By having just one step, the town can recoup its costs through selling the separated plastics, metal and aluminium, while paper and cardboard are burnt in filtered incinerators to provide power for the recycling. Cost to tax payer - nothing. In fact, it produces a profit which goes into local schools.

It can be done. My town has 10,000 residents and makes it work. But we do not have paid bureaucracy. Our Selectmen/women are all unpaid volunteers who expect value for money in everything the town funds.

What's wrong with newspaper? How much energy is wasted producing and distributing manufactured liners?

Sounds like another case of corruption.
