Rethink necessary over Mudeford cycle path

TEETHING problems at a new cycleway in Mudeford to improve facilities for Olympic training teams and local clubs have prompted Christchurch council to tweak the track.

The track is thought to be too low, resulting in large obstructive pebbles littering the concrete section, making it dangerous to use.

Resident Terry Atkinson said: “It is not possible to ride along – if you fall off as I did, you will quickly realise how close the railings are. And once the algae get on it, it will be very slippery.

“I believe a rethink is necessary. Cyclists do deserve more respect.”

The work has been completed by the council in a bid to attract more world-class sailing events to the town, since Christchurch was designated as one of the pre-Olympic training campsites.

Steve Woolard, coastal engineering team leader at Christchurch council, said: “Since we planned this project the beach levels next to the extended terracing have risen by more than a metre, which means when there is a particularly high tide, sand and pebbles can get thrown over the concrete terrace.

“We will be alleviating this problem shortly by installing mesh panelling up to the height of the first cross rail along the seaward side of the railings for approximately 75 metres from the Mudeford Quay end.

“Work will be carried out by the council’s coastal maintenance gang and access along the terracing will not be affected.”

“Since we planned this project the beach levels next to the extended terracing have risen by more than a metre"

Since it was planned maybe, but surely the beach has not risen that much from when the work actually started or am I missing something here?

I've always maintained that building something the other-side of the sea defense was a ridiculous idea. A complete waste of taxpayers money!
They have raped the beach and road roughshod over residents. It was deemed to not requiring planning permission despite being in a conservation area and had very limited consultation - primarily with interested parties ie the Sailing Club.
Will it be an Olympic legacy? - I very much doubt it - by the time 2012 comes along it will be under a foot of sand!

The Council were told by several local people, that this path would be difficult and costly to keep clear, they have made a rod for council payer's backs. The recent good weather has already shown evidence of an overcrowding problem ,cyclists pedestrians and wheelchairs do not fit well on a 3metre wide path, and this is before the racing dinghies arrive. The stupidity of this is even more evident when you see a tarmaced 6 metre wide path running parallel to it ,where cyclists ,are ,if you believe the signage, banned.
To my mind the answer now is to permit cycling on Gundimore, ban it on the new path, and only attempt to keep the new path open in the Summer. This will keep cyclists happy, reserve the already popular new path for the disabled, the pedestrians and the sailing club, during the busy time, and save the council tax payers the cost of keeping the path clear in the Winter.Gundimore Prom in the Winter is not busy enough for mixed traffic to be of any concern. It has been made quite clear this week that amongst their other mistakes the Council have no idea how many cyclists wish to use this route, this is because for years now they have listened to the wrong "few" take a bow FCRA.

I've been watching this work from start to finish & believe it or not the beach has risen that much, if you go down and look there is a "new" beach where there was sea !! all the sand is being washed up, along with the shingle straight onto the path !! I cant see putting a mesh along the railings is going to help, it will just build up.

Yes, it always seemed like a particularly annoying waste of taxpayer's money to try to build anything on the seaward side of the sea wall, and lo and behold the 100% predictable has happened.
