Yet another petrol pummelling

DORSET motorists are being clobbered at the petrol pumps again as fuel prices head for a 26 per cent rise in just a year.

Drivers filling up at pumps across the county are getting a shock when they get to the till to discover that filling the tank of an average family car now costs more than £60.

Prices have been slowly creeping upwards for some time but this week diesel and unleaded hit an average price of £5 per gallon, a measure still used by many people to gauge prices.

At East Knighton, unleaded now costs 109.9p per litre, the same price as at BP in Wimborne and at Hinton service station. Murco in Southbourne is one of the cheapest at 108.9p.

Diesel hit 114.9p at Holton Heath and 112.9p at BP in Wimborne yesterday, two of the highest in the area.

At the BP in Castle Lane, Bournemouth, the prices were 112.9p for unleaded and 114.9p for diesel.

There are fears that prices could continue to rise in the run-up to Christmas, a time when families traditionally travel long distances to see family and friends.

“The festive season is when drivers are trying to get as much as they can out of their pay packets but this year they are seeing huge amounts being siphoned off to pay for fuel,” said Luke Bosdet of the AA.

Haulage companies have also warned they may have to raise their prices if diesel costs continue to go up, which could lead to higher prices in the shops.

It does surprise me that people use expensive petrol stations. With a little forward planning drivers could save a Bob or two

although it is the nearest petrol station to me the bp in castle lane is always the dearest and i will never use it the shell garage kinson road gets my money a few of my mates are the same perhaps if everyone used the cheaper priced petrol stations the castle lane bp would have to bring its prices down

Don't blame the petrol stations themselves as it is more like the speculators within the trading markets that are buying petrol futures and getting tankers to moor offshore until the price increases for crude yet again. It is the greed of the markets that is inflating the price. Oh and the extra fuel duty from an inept government.

I blame Gordon Brown, under his watch the pound has dropped 20% against the dollar - crude oil is priced in dollars so we pay more in pounds for our petrol. Then lets not forget he keeps putting fuel duty up every few months and we can expect another hike when VAT goes back up to 17.5% in January. The VAT on petrol is the real joke though, we have to pay this on the fuel duty he levies - he is taxing us on the tax we pay :-(

As long as the greedy speculators who moor tankers offshore and wait for the price to rise are allowed to flourish the price of fuel will be sky-high.
Let's hope they get caught and lose money. Mr Brown doesn't care, he get the fuel duty anyway.

70% of the price of a gallon of fuel is down to tax - this is far more than the speculators can ever hope to make.

Working on a average car doing 35mpg with an average empty tank of 10 gals it costs approx £50 to fill at an average of £1.10 per ltr therefore average running cost is 13 to 15p per mile so if you travel 5 miles for cheap petrol (2.5 miles there and back) it has cost you 65 to 75 p to do so the difference in cost from £1.08 to £1.10 per ltr is 2p, over a tank would be 89p you have only saved 14p on a tank.

Unless of course you have to travel past the cheaper garage anyway. There is no doubt about it, the garages are jumping on the bandwaggon. Crude oil prices are falling, and have been for a while, yet the prices at the pumps are creeping up. The Government are trying to force people out of their cars, but where are they going to make up the tax if people do that? Election year next year, so expect to see a drop in tax..... which will go back up as soon as the election is over.

Here's something to ponder about fuel prices..
Many of the major producers have retail petrol sales, such as texaco, bp, etc..
They also sell some of their fuel on the open market, the price of which is determined by market forces, speculation, ratios of supply to demand and so on.
However, the fuel they sell on their forecourts has NOT be through this market system. Their costs of production and delivery remain pretty much constant, yet they choose to price it AS IF it had been traded on a volatile market.
Other fuel outlets, eg Spar or Tescos have to bid for and buy their wholesale fuel at the markets price from these producers, so their prices will naturally reflect the price it is to BUY crude.
The price to produce and refine petrol is not affected by sales of it elsewhere.
If there isn't a more blatant example of profiteering than this, I cannot think of one.

With regards to the B.P. station in castle lane it really does amaze me that people fill up at this rip off garage when there is a tesco station less than half a mile away, there is also an esso station in Barrack road, most of the time these two are at least 3 to 4 pence cheaper than the B.P. station, to all those people, dont moan about high petrol price when you cant be bothered to shop around

You can thank the speculators for the price hike in fuel and in food. I have friend who boasts that he has made a killing since he speculated in food stuffs. What we need is a long wall and plenty of ammo! Friend or not he would be the first in line!

Funny that, I was thinking the same yesterday, we moan about speed cameras and the small fine for not driving and thinking but we have to but food and these shops make more profit from us a week than the speed cameras will take from us in a lifetime, well unless you are a really silly driver
