THE latest edition of a popular book exploring the history and attractions of Christchurch’s river network has gone on sale.

Published for the first time last year, The River Book is aimed at providing both residents of the town and tourists a comprehensive annual guide to the town’s waterways.

It has been edited by aerial photographer Stephen Bath with writer and historian Chris Wood.

This year’s book, which is available at dozens of shops and restaurants in the town, includes features on Sunseeker and the ‘King of the River’ Mike Wallrock.

“I’m really pleased with how it’s turned out,” Mr Bath, who can often be seen boating on the town’s rivers, said. “The whole process has taken about six months but I think it will be something which is of interest to tourists and locals.

“In my view, it’s the best guide to Christchurch out there.”

The idea of creating the book came about three years ago when he and Mr Wood were asked by United Boats to help promote their business.

Last year, 10,000 copies of the first edition of The River Book were produced and sold throughout the town.

“I’ve learnt a lot from last year’s book,” Mr Bath added. “It’s taken a lot of work but it is something I’m proud of and I think will interest anyone living in Christchurch.”

Included in this year’s book is an interview with the former chairman of Sunseeker International, John Macklin, a feature on Michael Wallrock who ran a fleet of pleasure boats and a history of the Noddy Train.

The book, which can be bought for £3, also includes a map of the area and a Christchurch Quay tide tables pull-out.
