Hundreds of homes were without water last night after a burst water main flooded streets in Christchurch.

Around 500 properties in Highcliffe, Mudeford and Somerford were without water for at least two hours following the incident, which is believed to have taken place in Saffron Drive.

The road was completely flooded, with debris from the burst scattered over the street.

Parts of the Hoburne Farm Estate, Rowan Drive and Lymington Road were affected.

An engineer for Bournemouth Water said at the scene last night: "The water could be off for several hours depending on the size of the burst water main."

This morning, Monday, a spokesperson for Bournemouth Water said: "

"All customers in the Somerford / Mudeford area of Christchurch have had their water supplies restored following a burst water main in the Saffron Way area of the Hoburne Farm Estate at around 8pm yesterday evening.

"Some properties were affected for up to three hours while Bournemouth Water worked to isolate the burst, revalve the network and repair the damaged pipe. Water was restored to all customers by 11pm Sunday.

"Our call centre experienced exceptionally heavy demand on Sunday evening. Call centre staff stayed late to answer as many calls as possible and we apologise to customers who had difficulty getting through. Our website was also updated."
