AN OUTSPOKEN member of the authority discussing issues on the Local Government Reorganisation in Dorset has quit his post, describing the experience as "completely unrewarding".

Cllr David Jones sat on the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole joint committee as a representative for Dorset County Council.

He has taken the decision to leave his role citing frustrations with the manner in which meetings are held.

In a resignation letter sent to Dorset County Council leader Rebecca Knox, which has been seen by the Daily Echo, Cllr Jones says he has been "disgusted" with how business is handled.

The letter adds: "Far from being a forum for thorough discussion of the issues vitally affecting my constituents in Burton Grange, and in Dorset as a whole, it appears to me that this committee is simply a mechanism for implementing policies designed in Bournemouth Town Hall.

"Only the efforts of the sole "opposition” member in full committee, and of councillors Flagg and Jamieson behind the scenes, give any semblance of proper debate.

Cllr Jones says in his resignation that he feels his presence adds credence to the process, which will "imperil" Christchurch and the wellbeing of Dorset.

He concludes by assuring Cllr Knox of his support and wishes of success for the emerging Dorset Area Council.

The Daily Echo approached Cllr Jones to comment on his resignation and he said: "I joined the committee with the expectation that it was a forum for for debate and that we would be able to safeguard the interests of the people of Christchurch.

"We are already seeing how this council is being pushed to form the 21st century city by the sea, with it being put on the shoulders of the people who can least afford it.

"I hope to be able to play a full part in scrutinising the joint committee where it will make more difference, with an opportunity to field questions that will be answered."
