FIREFIGHTERS have warned Dorset residents to stay safe as a "Siberian blast" of weather continues.

Electric heaters should be unplugged before residents go to bed or leave the house, while gas fires should be professionally serviced every year.

Those with open fires should ensure ashes are completely out when disposed of, and that embers are under control and properly extinguished.

Electric blankets should also be used according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Craig Baker, area manager for the Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “The Met Office is warning of an exceptionally cold snap over the next few days and, as it gets colder, it's inevitable that people will spend more time indoors staying as warm as possible.

"Using additional heating is understandable, but this can increase the risk of fire. By following some simple rules, you can stay safe and warm.

“We are here to help and offer advice.

"If you are in doubt over any fire safety issues, please do get in touch, and always remember to test your smoke detector every week, as working smoke detectors save lives.”

Drivers should be wary of predicted snowfall this week and be sure to slow down, maintain a safe gap from the vehicle in front and look out for vulnerable road users, including cyclists and pedestrians.

Mr Baker said: “There are basic safe driving principles which apply in all adverse conditions, but especially when there is ice or snow.

"We would urge people to follow the forecasts and abide by any travel advice that is issued as the week progresses.”
