RESIDENTS are celebrating after successfully campaigning to prevent a controversial development in their Christchurch neighbourhood.

An appeal had been launched on plans to build three bungalows and a detached garage in Amberwood Drive, Walkford, following Christchurch Borough Council's planning department rejected the scheme.

However, a government planning inspector has dismissed the case, as well as a challenge for costs from the council by the applicant, Radmore Homes.

The main issues around the development were cited as its impact on the character and appearance of the area, the living conditions of occupiers of neighbouring properties with particular reference to noise, disturbance and outlook, and whether the proposal makes adequate provision for the disposal of waste.

While the planning inspector said the provision for waste disposal was acceptable, they admitted the proposed development would have a detrimental impact on the living conditions of existing occupiers and would "be at odds" with the prevailing character of the area.

The inspector's report adds: "I consider that the three dwellings proposed would result in a cramped development which would be at odds with the prevailing character of the area. I therefore find the proposed development would be unacceptably harmful to the character of the area.

"The site is in an accessible location within a built up area. However, I have found that the proposal would not be compatible with its surroundings and would fail to adequately protect the living conditions for occupiers of existing properties."

The proposed scheme was contest on mass by residents of Amberwood. A total of 24 locals wrote to Christchurch Borough Council voicing their reasons for objecting the scheme, with a further objection letter signed by 50 residents sent to the planning inspectorate.

An appeal was also launched by Radmore Homes against the council over costs, but the planning inspector said unreasonable behaviour resulting in unnecessary or wasted expense had not been demonstrated.
