A MAJOR scheme to raise an area of promenade at a Christchurch beach began on Monday.

The £540,000 works will see the lower section of the walkway at Avon Beach raised by around 900mm and widened in places, with the hope this will ensure better protection from the elements and limit coast erosion.

The walkway is now fenced off from just east of the Noisy Lobster for approximately 240m. Visitors can still access the beach in this area.

PT Contractors Ltd are carrying out the work, which has required the beach huts to be temporarily removed from the promenade.

Throughout the construction period the huts have been moved to the west of the Noisy Lobster and also to the east of the works area.

The original cost of the scheme was estimated to be in the region of £300,000, however this rose after a tendering process.

Weather dependent, the renovation and improvement works are due to be completed by March 25, with the beach huts scheduled to return to their original locations by March 31.
