CHRISTCHURCH Air Scouts have officially opened their new hut.

The new Scout building was opened by the Mayor of Christchurch Cllr Nick Geary on June 12.

The 22nd Christchurch (Hurn) Air Scouts, aged between 6 and 14, were said to be delighted that the Mayor was able to join them for the event.

Approximately 60-70 people turned up to the event with the Mayor who seemed to “seemed to enjoy it thoroughly”, according to Group Scout leader Oli Micklefield.

On the new hut, Mr Micklefield said: “It’s absolutely fantastic. When we were at the hall we weren’t able to store anything, we had to take everything ourselves. Having the hut means we can have all of our own equipment there ready for the enjoyment of the young people.

“It’s giving us more publicity as well due to the fact we’ve got our own hall with signs on the side. We’re getting new members as people are driving past and thinking that’s something they could get their children involved with.”

The entire membership of the Hurn Scout, Cub and Beaver groups were in attendance with their family and friends. Cllr Margaret Phipps also accepted the position as the group’s Honorary President at the event.

The new building is the product of 18 months of fundraising and contributions from donors and benefactors. These donors were on hand to witness the Mayor cut the ribbon to officially open the premises.

Additionally, the group has received a grant of nearly £10,000 from the National Lottery to complete the renovation.

The group also paid tribute to Christopher Dye and his team from Purewell Developments who transported the buildings from their old home in Wareham and undertook all the work for no profit. The team from Purewell Developments also donated the kitchen and bathrooms for free.
