FERNDOWN councillors have decided against installing a splash pool in the town - because Christchurch's pool costs tens of thousands of pounds each year.

The possibility of bringing a pool to Ferndown was discussed during a public meeting earlier this year about plans to develop youth provision.

But town clerk Vanessa Ricketts said although a pool had been considered, the "negatives outweighed the positives".

She said Christchurch Borough Council's 'splashpark' cost £250,000 to install.

In addition, the attraction costs a further £70,000 every year to maintain.

However, the pool is free to use and doesn't bring any revenue to the town.

Ms Ricketts said the attraction, which is located at the Quomps in Christchurch, has "attracted a number of insurance claims for accidents".

The pool draws hundreds of people to the Quay during the summer months.

The shallow paddling pool features water jets and sprays, a water play pump, channels and sluices. Next to the attraction is a play park with a climbing frame, swings and a wooden train.

Matt Reeks, community and open spaces manager for Christchurch council, said just one insurance claim has been made in the past six years.

It has not yet been settled, he said.

"The Quomps Splashpark on Christchurch Quay is a popular facility and there are no plans to change how we run this site.

"Accidents do happen but we do our utmost to make sure that we minimise risks by undertaking regular inspections throughout the year, with increased visits during the summer season."

He said maintenance costs have been driven up by vandalism.

"Sadly, this site has been the victim of vandalism, which does increase our yearly running costs and also meant that we have had to close the site for repairs during the school holidays.

"This is very disappointing for residents and visitors who enjoy using this free facility.

"We have recently launched a campaign urging the public to report anti-social behaviour and vandalism at Christchurch Quay to help support us this year.

"One insurance claim has been made since The Quomps splash park opened in 2010.

"We are unable to comment further on this case as the claim has not yet been settled.’"
