THE owners of a gift shop in the heart of Christchurch are applying to turn part of the store into a private living area.

The plans for Ye Olde Eight Bells in Church Street, near the Priory Church, will allow the business to 'stay viable', the owners say.

Applicant Ian Penny, who owns the shop, said the change of use would enable the shop to cut its costs, increase security and allow the business to continue trading as it has for many years.

In the application, he said the residential area would be made larger at the back of the shop, turning it into a dining area and living room.

Two partition walls with doors would be erected, sympathetic to the nature of the 18th century building, near the historic Priory.

The appearance of the building will not be affected from outside the building.

In the application, Mr Penny said: "We understand the historic nature of the building and importance to the commercial part of this historic part of Christchurch.

"By partially changing the use, it will enable us to continue to trade."

Comments can be made on the application until January 13.

A decision will be made by planning officers.
