PLANS to add more than 60 spaces to a car park at a Christchurch golf centre are likely to be approved.

Members of Christchurch council's planning committee will meet on Thursday to discuss the plans for Play Golf in Riverside Avenue.

The golf centre, which also includes a two-storey driving range and developing clubhouse, currently has 160 spaces, but wants to increase this to 221.

This would mean 126 in the main car park, 52 in the overflow, 43 spaces in the driveway perimeter and four disabled driver spaces.

It is part of a bid by the business to broaden their appeal to the wider community, increasing their business offer as well.

The plans have been recommended for approval by planning officers.

A planning report said: "It is further advised that for this investment to reach full potential, the enhanced visitor numbers will require enhanced facilities, including the provision of increased parking facilities, laid out in a workable and better managed parking area."

It says the increasing facilities such as the clubhouse will lead to more visitors at peak times, hence the need for more parking.

Officers say the development would not have an adverse impact on the area, as long as tree loss is minimised.

The attraction also boasts the first footgolf course in Dorset.

Established in 1977, the club has a very active membership, with men's, ladies, senior's and junior sections who all compete in county leagues and friendly matches.

It was taken over by Playgolf in 2009 and rebranded.
