DORSET'S leaders have "paid no attention" to the views of the people of Christchurch, a councillor has said.

Borough councillor David Jones was speaking about the recently concluded consultation on local government reorganisation. This week the leaders of the county's local authorities said the document showed public support for option 2b - a combined Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch unitary authority.

Christchurch council has voted that the authority remain independent.

Cllr Jones said the public support for option 2b was based on a "heavily criticised" consultation document and an "unintentionally misleading" questionnaire.

"I am very disappointed that some of Dorset’s leaders paid no attention to the views of Christchurch people and would thank those from other authorities who did express support for the views of the Ancient Borough," he said.

"Only in Christchurch was there an attempt to provide alternative views and other sources of information, and to allow people to ask questions of councillors, county councillors, and the MP.

"The fact that nearly 400 people attended open meetings gives validity to this view.

"In the debate in Christchurch council it was clear that councillors respected the genuine view of their constituents and rejected any change."
