ROADWORKS which have been taking place for over two months in Christchurch are due to finish today (DEC16).

Work has been carried out in Bargates since September, when staff from SSE carried out repair work to a deep-laid cable, which disturbed a sewerage pipe.

Wessex Water staff were called to carry out repairs to the pipe, but were required to leave the site following a gas leak, which was a danger to the public. Once this was finished, Wessex Water finished their repair work.

Traffic heading to and from Christchurch town centre is being controlled by two-way signals.

A spokesperson for Wessex Water said that the highways authority, Dorset County Council, had given the firm up to December 23 to complete the work, but they are 'on track to have the job completed ahead of schedule.'

They added: "We have been carrying out repairs to a sewer damaged by a third party. As we had to excavate around essential utilities, including a gas main and electricity cables in the area, work took longer than normal.

"We have personally spoken to local businesses and apologise for any inconvenience caused by the work, which is due to be completed today."
