GROWING concerns over the reorganisation of councils in Dorset has led to two more public meetings being held in Christchurch.

Organised by Christchurch and Dorset County councillor, David Jones, along with Christchurch MP Chris Chope, the meetings will be held on Saturday afternoon and next Friday October 21.

The consultation on changing the structures of councils in Dorset is due to end on October 25.

Dorset’s nine major local authorities are considering merging into just two all-purpose councils.

That would mean Bournemouth and Poole combining, while Christchurch and East Dorset could either join them or become part of a separate authority for the rest of the county.

Concerns have been expressed from various quarters about the length of the consultation, with some residents also saying the lack of business plan was an issue for them.

A series of questions on the potential changes were recently put to the leader of Christchurch council, which resulted in a motion of no confidence against him.

Cllr David Jones said: "There are growing concerns over this consultation process.

"Many residents have told me that while they wish to support Christchurch remaining an independent council this choice does not appear as a separate option.

"Also, the financial figures supporting a change to unitary authorities are strongly disputed.

"The public meetings give people the opportunity to learn more about what is offered and also how they can really have their say.”

Mr Chope added: "I have asked so many questions on 'reshaping the councils' and I have not had answers.

"It seems to me that figures within the consultation document are not correct.

"There are only two weeks left and without correct figures it is increasingly frustrating.

"There is concern about the evidence being given in the presentations and roadshows and consultation documents."

He said he has requested more information.

Speaking previously, Mr Chope has said the consultation process is seriously flawed, and expressed fears that leaders had already made up their minds.

However, all the leaders of Dorset's councils have said that due to the funding difficulties in local government, a change is needed.

On Saturday October 15, the meeting will be held at Priory Hall in Princess Avenue, Christchurch from 3.30pm.

The next meeting will be held at 7.30pm on Friday October 21, at Burton Youth and Community Centre in Sandy Plot.
