The leader of Christchurch council faces a vote of no confidence following a stormy meeting last night.

The motion was proposed by the leader of the opposition, long-standing Independent councillor Colin Bungey.

It followed a heated meeting on Tuesday evening, when the leader of the council was asked 21 questions, mainly over the controversial council reorganisation, from fellow Conservative members and opposition councillors.

From questions over lack of transparency to the 'flawed' consultation, leader, Cllr Ray Nottage found himself questioned by members for an hour.

A motion for debate on the consultation, put forward by Cllr David Jones and Cllr Lesley Dedman, was not accepted by the Mayor of Christchurch, Cllr Trish Jamieson, prior to the meeting.

Speaking before the meeting ended on Tuesday, Cllr Bungey said: "Bearing in mind the answer or lack of answers to some of the questions tonight, the opposition wish to give notice that at the next council meeting we will be moving a vote of no confidence in the leadership of this council.

"I understand that under the constitution I can't raise it tonight so I will have to give notice of it for a future council meeting."

A full report of the meeting with Cllr Nottage's answers to the 21 questions, wll be posted later.
