A MUM said she feared she’d die when a marquee was ripped from the ground at an event in Hurn.

Jessica Vogel, husband Tim and their nine-year-old son Leo, who live in Poole, visited Route 66 on Saturday.

After just 20 minutes, the event was hit by a freak storm which left visitors searching for shelter.

However, Mrs Vogel said the weather caused one of the marquees to work its way free from the ground.

She said: “I just froze with terror.

“I saw the huge metal poles had come out of the ground. Suddenly, everyone was just panicking.

“I’ve got disabilities which means that I can’t run so my husband shouted for us to drop down and try and avoid the poles.

“I couldn’t stop looking up at the spikes as I was lying there - I thought I’d be impaled.”

Mrs Vogel said she felt “helpless” as she couldn’t protect her son.

“I really thought that I was going to die,” she said.

In her fall to the ground, Mrs Vogel twisted her shoulder, while Leo suffered a graze to his back.

“I live in chronic pain already,” she said.

“I have lymphoedema and sometimes I suffer from ME.”

The show, which took place across the weekend, featured wrestling shows, lawnmower racing and display of classic cars.

Emma Preston, one of the event’s organisers, said the “freak” weather “came over so quickly”.

“In terms of health and safety, this incident was covered within minutes,” she said.

“We were able to put our event emergency plan into practice, and everyone worked together really well.

“I’m proud of the way staff reacted.”

Mrs Vogel said Ms Preston apologised on behalf of the event management team and has refunded the family’s money.

“Emma is taking this very seriously,” Mrs Vogel said.
