TALKS are still ongoing over the future of the former Christchurch post office.

Despite the Post Office Ltd saying last month that the closure of the main branch in Church Street was "temporary", the premises remain closed.

The prominent town centre store is being marketed by Ellis and Partners, following the shock closure in April.

And they say there are offers on the table, with "a lot" of interest expressed from people.

However, it is understood that these do not include using the shop as a Post Office, although the opportunity remains open should a post master be found before a deal is struck with another interested party.

More than a month ago, a spokesperson for the Post Office said they were investigating the options available, which they hoped would enable them to reopen the branch "as soon as possible."

When asked for an update on the branch, a spokesperson said there was nothing new to say but it is hoped there may be an update soon, they added.

The business was liquidated after it was deemed "no longer financially viable".

Competition from cheaper parcel delivery companies, business rates and banks and businesses on the High Street offering similar services were part of the struggle to keep the business afloat.

The issue was raised at a meeting of Christchurch Citizens Association recently, with residents concerned about the proximity of a main branch post office, should Christchurch's not reopen.

The nearest main branches would be Highcliffe or Tuckton.

Cllr Peter Hall, town centre ward councillor said he had been contacted by a lot of residents over the closure.

"I am very disappointed that this well supported Post Office has closed. It is a facility that we need in the town centre.

"The closure could have an impact on traders and the footfall in the town.

"For the benefit of our residents and traders we need a replacement.

"I understand the Post Office are committed to finding a suitable site in the near future."
