A SAINTS fan has been arrested after a Cherries fan was seriously injured in an incident shortly after AFC Bournemouth visited Southampton last night.

Emergency services were called after a man in his 30s or 40s was knocked unconscious in Northam Road near the King Alfred pub at around 6.05pm.

A 39-year-old man from Christchurch received head injuries and remains in hospital in a serious but not life-threatening condition.

A 53-year-old man from Southampton was arrested in connection with the incident and remains in custody.

Police are appealing for witnesses as there would have been hundreds of people in the area following the match.

Witnesses saw members of the public trying to give the victim CPR at the scene.

A spokesman for AFC Bournemouth said: "We are aware of the incident after yesterday's game which resulted in the injury of one of our supporters.

"Everyone at the club would like to wish him a full and speedy recover."

An ambulance service spokeswoman said an ambulance and a rapid response vehicle were sent to the scene after a call from the police.

“We conveyed him to Southampton General Hospital for further treatment,” she said.

She added: “There were reports he was unconscious but I cannot say how serious his condition was.”

Anyone with information should call police on 101.
