A NEW contract has been signed by the organiser of Christchurch's Monday Market, backed unanimously by councillors.

At a meeting of Christchurch council's resources committee last week, members heard the results of a survey undertaken with High Street businesses, which showed they were in favour of the market as it increases footfall in the town.

Some shops had asked that certain stalls selling similar goods to their own, were not placed outside their premises, which was included as a restriction in the new contract.

Issues, including litter, were to be discussed with the market manager once the new contract started, the meeting heard.

A report to the committee also said the council's annual income forecast from the market is £93,600, with an estimated net profit of £28,600.

Cllr Colin Bungey said: "The market is a big asset to the High Street and I would like to see it continue.

"I would like the organiser to try and get more diverse stalls in there as I think it needs something to bring it up.

"If we could encourage that, I would be happy."

Cllr Claire Bath, portfolio holder for economy said: "They run a very professional show and are very open to suggestions from us when we have our meetings.

"Members can also see the financial benefits of having market.

"It also helps our retailers because it increases the footfall to the town.

"For the council as well, we have increased revenue for our car parking because Mondays are a busy day in Christchurch."

The committee also supported another six Sunday Art and Antique Markets in Christchurch High Street during 2016.

Monday market traders would be prohibited from trading during the Sunday market, with food stalls also limited to ensure people were encouraged to visit town centre retailers.
