CHRISTCHURCH could be left with a vastly reduced Poppy Appeal this year if a new organiser can't be found in time.

Poppy Appeal community fundraiser, Ian Jarvis, said they are in desperate need of a willing volunteer to come forward to help.

Christchurch usually raises around £26,000 - £30,000 each year for the appeal - a total which could be diminished should no-one be found.

He said: "Gerry Nunn, who had been an excellent Poppy Appeal Organiser for Christchurch for a number of years, retired earlier in the year and I have been unable to source a replacement.

"The Poppy Appeal Organiser position has long formed the backbone of the Legion’s network of volunteers and without them the Poppy Appeal does not succeed."

So far this year, Dorset has contributed £640,000 to the national appeal, which supports the armed forces, including those servicemen and women who have been in Afghanistan.

Mr Jarvis added: "The Poppy Appeal organisers are critical to ensure that we have the funding required for our beneficiaries.

"All organisers are supported by me. It is crucial we find someone; the stock has been ordered and we're ready to go."

Organisers do not need a military connection, just a desire to be organised and enjoy interacting with others, he said.

Volunteers would focus most of their efforts on the Appeal between October and November, with some seasonal admin work from July onwards.

And if more than one person came forward, the role could be shared among people.

Training is provided and expenses are reimbursable.
