A POP-up bar in Christchurch has been refused permission, due to concerns about the loss of a shop unit.

The retrospective application to change the use of the former New Look store in Saxon Square from a shop to a drinking establishment was refused by Christchurch council.

The application to turn the shop into a beach bar, was submitted by the owners of Soho.

But Christchurch council's planning department refused to grant permission for the change of use, saying it would "prejudice the ability of the town centre to meet projected floor space requirements necessary to support economic growth."

It added: "The loss of the A1 unit will have a detrimental impact on establishing a strong retail mix within the town centre."

Officers had recommended the scheme for refusal, prior to the decision, saying while the bar would not be detrimental to the area, the loss of the retail unit was a concern.
