CHRISTCHURCH Sea Cadets could face closure unless they can find more willing volunteers.

The group, who have been running for more than 40 years, have suffered a series of major staffing blows recently, putting their future in jeopardy.

And along with the recent introduction of more stringent qualification requirements from the national organisation, the group have been left without a number of key instructors.

Despite some kind-hearted people coming to the fore, they are lacking qualified instructors in power boating, kayaking, sailing, windsurfing and rowing.

They are also looking for people to take on drills, training, admin or leadership roles either.

It means the range of activities the youngsters are used to has been reduced, with fears the authority to train could be withdrawn, leading to closure.

Chairman, Mike McAndrew said: "There must be people out there who have such talents and could offer them on a regular basis for the benefit of our youth and here is a great opportunity.

"It really is very rewarding to see youngsters snap to attention and work as a team when the shout goes up.

"They learn everything from self discipline and teamwork to navigation and knots and they get the opportunity to get away on some amazing activities such as sailing on the tall ship Royalist.

"All things you would expect from an organisation based upon the customs of the Royal Navy."

The unit is split over two sites, with their winter head quarters at Portfield Hall and the summer base at Christchurch Quay.

They meet on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and cater for 10-18-year-olds.
