WEDDINGS are still the biggest source of income at the historic Highcliffe Castle, a report has revealed.

The tourist attraction's annual report was presented to councillors at Christchurch's scrutiny and policy review committee on Tuesday (17/3).

And with a successful bid for funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund for the next phase of improvements, the future looks rosy for the Castle.

The HLF gave outline agreement for £2.9million to restore parts of the historic castle, including further repairs and reopening of the derelict Penleaze Wing.

The scheme, named The Phoenix Files, will see an initial development grant of £233,100 given for public consultation on the plans, which include a ‘dynamic’ heritage centre for visitors, which will also display the Castle’s collection of stained glass.

The report to the committee at Christchurch council heard weddings brought in £180,000 in 2013/14 for both receptions and ceremonies.

And it is hoped the introduction of an 'all-inclusive' package will boost that further.

Growth has also been seen in the number of business meetings and private functions with signs of recovery in gift shop sales as well.

The report to councillors said: "The gift shop has suffered a little over the last few years of recession but is showing signs of recovery.

"If trading in March equals that is 2013/14 then it is estimated that the net turnover will be approximately £52,000. This will exceed the previous two years."

And the report also said the funding from HLF had also boosted the motivation of the 110 volunteers who help run the Castle.

It is estimated the time the volunteers have given towards 'The Phoenix Files' is worth around £70,000.

In the report to the committee, manager, David Hopkins said: "With the prospect of a £3.8million investment, the future for Highcliffe Castle is very positive.

"There will, no doubt, be challenges along the way, particularly as we have elected to continue to trade on a business-as-usual basis throughout the project.

"The current service review will provide a robust, resilient team to develop the business income and reputation of the Castle on a local and national stage."
