PLANS to convert the former Priory vicarage into a large holiday home to ‘boost tourism’ in Christchurch have been submitted.

The building in Quay Road has lain empty for nearly five years after the departure of Reverend Canon Hugh Williams in 2010.

His successor, Reverend Christopher Mann, chose not to reside in the Grade II listed building, initially renting a property before a new vicarage was built at the rear of Quay Road house for him and his family.

He left the Priory last year, announcing his departure via Twitter, saying there had been a “breakdown of trust” with church wardens.

Now, after putting the property on the market last year, the Diocese of Winchester has sold the property to Tony Sweeney of Short Stay Homes.

Plans for the 11-bedroom property include refurbishment and alteration works such as new bathrooms and a kitchen, and a new side porch.

And it could be capable of accommodating up to 24 people, perfect for family gatherings and weddings, says Mr Sweeney, who grew up in Christchurch and went to Twynham School.

“Our intention is to fully refurbish the property to a very high standard and then provide it for holiday accommodation”, he added.

“It will be perfect for family gatherings, wedding receptions and other functions.

“I don’t think there is anywhere else in the area that offers anything else like this.”

He added: “The property was in a bit of a state. It is a Grade II listed property so we can’t make a lot of change to it.

“However, it was well built originally so it’s very sound.

“People have been very supportive. It’s a great opportunity to bring it back into use. I think it will be great for tourism in Christchurch.”

It is hoped the property will be available from July this year.
