FIREFIGHTERS were called after a flame was seen coming out of the ground at a residential street in Southbourne this afternoon.

A spokesman from Dorset Fire and Rescue Service said a crew was called to Carbery Avenue at 1.30pm after the flame was spotted by local residents.

Initially it was believed to have been caused by a gas leak but further investigations suggest the fire was sparked by an electrical fault in a high voltage cable.

The spokesman said: β€œIt's believed to have been a small fire involving an electrical cable which ran adjacent to the gas line.”

Staff from SGN, the gas emergency service provider in the south of England, were called to assess the situation to carry out safety checks and found no evidence of a gas leak.
